本鄉位處恆春半島之上，中央山脈末段，鄉境呈現特殊狹長地形，南北長達30公里，但東西寬卻僅有100公尺左右，且多為海岸峭壁，總面積約17平方公里，人口約6360人，是本島人口最少的平地鄉，氣候上則屬熱帶季風氣候。
